Life with kids is wonderful. But sometimes, it can be exhausting. It can be hard to find new and fun activities to keep them entertained, especially when we are trying to avoid screentime! There are so many products out there to help with kids boredom, but there are actually fun projects that you can do together at home, that help the environment and don’t cost much money.

Read on for ideas for eco-friendly projects you can do with your kids, that will teach them and you about the environment and help your kids to gain useful life skills. At the end, a few tips to stay sane throughout the process!

Container gardening

If you havn’t got  a container gardener yet, what are you waiting for? Of course, gardening isn’t for everyone, but this is a very accessible and kid-friendly way to explore whether you get enjoyment out of growing plants. Try recycling things like yogurt pots, egg cartons and plastic bottles which you can use to plant your seeds in.

Get your kids involved with the decoration of your containers, take them to the garden shop and show them all the things they could grow. The more they’re involved the more serious they will be about the project.

Keep them interested by telling stories about the baby plants, and how they will help them grow. It’s super easy to grow herbs and plants in an indoor garden during the winter, so try it out and see if your kids enjoy it. More plants also means a happier household, so it’s a winner all around!

Composting

This is the next step if you enjoy container gardening. Teach your kids about waste and the environment, and how they can help to build a nicer place for all of us to live by making small daily choices.

Take a small bin and put all of your organic waste in there (except for meat). When it’s full, empty it into a bigger container outside. You can teach your child about responsibilities and assigning roles in a small way by letting them tip the waste into the container, and showing them what happens as the waste decomposes.

After a while, you will be able to use this to enrich your container gardening so you can enjoy beautiful flowers and some veggies, too. By showing the entire process of seeding, feeding and growth, children learn about life. So not only will you be helping the environment but you will also be giving your kids valuable lessons that will help them later on in their lives.

Make eco-friendly cleaners

I love this one because it’s one you can do in an afternoon or a weekend, and might get your kids involved in what might be everyone’s most dreaded task – cleaning! We know by now that many industrially produced cleaners aren’t that good for our health, but they’re so convenient. Making your own cleaners sounds a bit daunting but it doesn’t have to be.

Treat it as a project, take small steps and see whether using homemade cleaning products are a good fit for you and your family. To get started, source some refillable spray bottles. Do some online research to find out the ratio of liquids you will need. Generally, natural cleaning products contain water, vinegar, essential oils, herbs and baking soda.

With a little bit of online research, you and your kid will be making witches potions in no time! When it’s done, get them to help with wiping away the invisible bad guys that live on dusty surfaces. It goes without saying you can do anything with a magic potion, so let your kid’s imagination run wild.

You needn’t be a professional gardener or an alchemist to be able to do these things with your kids. These eco-friendly projects are cheap, fun and contain some valuable learning experiences for you and your children. These are great green alternatives to using finger paints or playdough that you will also find fun and engaging, since they’ll be benefiting you, too! Who doesn’t want more greenery and natural beauty in their lives? Or a sweet-smelling cleaner you made yourself? Let us know how you get on if you try a

My two love being outside and helping in the garden – it doesn’t always help my OCD and stress levels though lol. Great ideas x
