Maeve’s First Week Update

Maeve's first week update - Roseyhome - baby update, postpartum update, baby, newborn, 1 week update, first week update

I wanted to write weekly updates of our newborn baby girl, Maeve. They change so much in these first few days and the weeks soon pass in a whirlwind of breast feeds and nappy changes. I plan to do updates weekly until she is four weeks old and then I’ll do monthly updates after that.

Birth

Maeve Elizabeth was born at 6am on Monday 8th May 2017. It was a Speedy Labour.

As planned, I gave birth to her at home in my bedroom. My waters broke at 3.30am and Maeve was born at 5.50am. It was an all natural labour without any drugs. I still can’t believe I gave birth without any gas and air! This wasn’t intentional but the midwife bringing it didn’t arrive in time. I am going to write up my full labour and delivery story soon.

Weight

Maeve was born at 40+1 weeks and she weighed 7lbs 10 oz. I was surprised by this as Rosalie was born at 39+5 weeks and she weighed 7lb 14 oz.

Maeve was weighed again at her 5 day midwife check and had only lost 2 oz. I was really pleased to hear this as we are currently breast feeding and so you never really know how much milk baby is taking.

Daytime

Maeve is pretty much sleeping all day at the moment. She doesn’t open her eyes very much at all. I think I have seen her eyes probably once or twice. They are currently blue in colour and I wonder if they will stay blue like her sisters.

Nighttime

I don’t want to jinx her but Maeve has pretty much slept well since birth.  I feed her before we go to bed at about 10/11 pm and then she normally wakes once in the night about 1.30/2am. I feed her again and put her back down in her crib where she will sleep till about 5am.

Feeding

I am currently breast feeding Maeve and I hope to carry on until she is fully weaned. Maeve usually feeds every 3 hours. Although she does have periods throughout the day when she wants to feed lots, like every half an hour. At the moment I am feeding Maeve on demand, whenever she wants it.

Rosalie is loving being a big sister and Maeve is so good at putting up with Rosalie’s overzealous kisses and cuddles. Maeve recognises my voice and if she is being held by someone else in the room and I start talking she will follow my voice.

Maeve is a little darling and has fitted into our family perfectly. It’s as if we have been waiting all this time for her to arrive. I’m so happy she is finally here.

Awww, she’s absolutely gorgeous! Big congratulations to you all. Sounds like it was a speedy labour – well done for doing it with no gas and air. The same happened to my friend, she had a homebirth with her second and it was so speedy, the second midwife with the gas and air didn’t get there in time! Hope you are enjoying those newborn cuddles xx

Aw this is so lovely Sarah she is so sweet. That’s brilliant she is sleeping so well considering you are breastfeeding her too. I can’t believe you did it with no gas and air either! You superwoman! That stuff was a godsend for me in both my labours xx
