As promised I am writing up how we spent each of our port days whilst on our Royal Caribbean Cruise. Rome or Civitavecchia was our 4th day in port. You can also take a look at how we spent our days in Gibraltar, Barcelona and Nice.
Rome was the place I was most excited to see.
Despite having an hour and a half train journey to get to Rome even before we started I knew we would have to visit. Our friends Sarah and David that we met on our Cruise came with us too.
We had planned to make our own way to Rome so that we wouldn’t be waiting around unnecessarily. As soon as our feet touched dry land we strapped Rosalie to our back and caught a taxi to the train station. We did some research the night before and took the train to the Rome station that had a metro link, we then caught the metro straight to the colosseum.
The colosseum was magnificent. I got some wonderful photos and I am so glad that I have seen it. What I would say is it was exceptionally busy. I’m not sure if it was because we visited on a Saturday or if it is always like that, I expect the latter.
We chose to join a tour with one of the guides that approached us as soon as we came out of the metro station. The good thing about this was they got us into the colosseum within 5 minutes without us having to queue. If we hadn’t done this it would have taken over 2 hours before we would have even got into the colosseum. There is no way we would have been able to keep Rosalie occupied for that long!
On the downside our tour was quite big, there were around 20 people in our group and to keep sight of our guide in a very crowed colosseum was hard work. Our guide had a very strong italian accent and it was quite difficult to hear what she was saying over the hustle and bustle of the crowds. I love hearing all about the history so I found this quite frustrating, I had to make sure I was at the front and really concentrate to hear what was being said. Nick wasn’t too bothered though.
After the colosseum we took a stroll up to the forum and walked around the ruins. By this time it was getting hot and nearing lunch time, the girls were getting restless so we decided to stop of for a bite to eat. We found a lovely italian restaurant a few streets away from the colosseum where we had REAL Italian pizza and pasta.
In the afternoon we set out to find the Trevi Fountain. We all made a wish and took some gorgeous photos. Again the Trevi Fountain was ridiculously busy. Everyone was trying to squish in, It was hard to get a photo without another tourist photo bombing but we did manage it!
We treated ourselves to some gorgeous gelato from an Ice cream parlour just down from the Trevi Fountain. That was some good ice cream! We walked back to the metro station with our ice creams in hand and started to make our way back to the ship.
I have longed to go to Rome for as long as I can remember. We were only there for one day and managed to see two wonderful landmarks, even with a toddler in tow. Rosalie was such a good girl and loved being in her carrier. She didn’t grumble once! It was a very long day but I am so pleased we did it.

3rd August 2016 at 1:43 PMRome looks just as beautiful in your photos as I'd imagined it to be. It's a place I would definitely love to visit one day. That's a great tip about joining a tour to avoid the tours. I'm not sure my little lady would want to wait around either.

3rd August 2016 at 2:49 PMmy goodness that ice cream looks to die for. Its looks lovely there and so nice and hot. You photos really are fab!! We had a guided tour when we went and I also found that the tour group size was really big. they just want to get as much dosh as possible don't they.
